About the Church

The original St. Joseph's Church was built in 1847. The present buiding is the second Church on this site, and was built in 1886. Several renovations have taken place and the most recent one saw new lighting fixtures, new slate and copper roof, and a face lift. In 2001, the rectory which was formerly used to house several priests was badly deteriorating and was torn down to expand the much needed parking lot.

The Church has a seating capacity of about 1000 and is one of the largest ones in the Deanery of Kent. During the week, Mass is celebrated in the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, which holds fifty people. Just behind the church, there is the St Joseph Catholic School with classes from JK to grade eight. The staff and students frequently attend Mass. Our high school kids mostly attend the Ursuline College, which is familiarily known as the Pines. An Auditorium, known as the Parish Centre is constantly in use by the various parish groups, such as the Knights of Columbus, the two Catholic Women's Leagues, the R.C.I.A. etc. Funeral luncheons are held there as well.

About the Church

St. Ursula's Roman Catholic Church was originally a prefabricated building*, the first church which was erected in 1951 and was eventually replaced with the present, larger structure in 1976. The current Church has a capacity of nearly 700.

The Parish of St. Ursula's is comprised of some 1400 families. Two schools; St. Ursula's and George P. Vanier are within our parish boundaries having a combined total of approximately 700 elementary aged youth. In addition, our parish schools feed into the only Catholic high school in the city, Ursuline College "The Pines", having a population of nearly 2000 secondary school students and staff. We are a well diversified community of both young and old and everything in between. Our cultural heritage and backgrounds are varied as well, including a large contingency of first and second generation Italians.

* The old prefabricated building was donated to the St Vincent de Paul Camp at Bothwell.
